European session review: EUR weakens as investors await ECB officials’ comments, U.S.-EU trade deal headlines

EUR depreciated against other major currencies in the European session on Wednesday, as investors awaited the remarks from several representatives of the European Central Bank later in the day and the news on a potential trade deal between the U.S. and the European Union.

The ECB’s chief economist Philip Lane (10.45 GMT) and the ECB’s vice president Luis de Guindos (11:00 GMT) are among the central bank’s officials scheduled to speak on Wednesday. Markets will scrutinise their speeches for hints on the ECB’s further rate path.

Multiple news outlets claim that the EU is close to striking a trade agreement with the U.S., which, according to some reports, might contain higher tariffs than those granted to the UK.

Meanwhile, Germany’s Chancellor Merz said to the parliamentarians today that he is cautiously optimistic about a trade deal with the United States, which he believes could be agreed upon by the end of this month.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced in a Truth Social post late Tuesday that he will release 7 tariff letters Wednesday morning and more in the afternoon.

In addition, the U.S. leader threatened to impose 50% tariffs on copper and up to 200% tariffs on pharmaceutical imports.
