U.S. Vice President JD Vancesaid on Wednesday that the administration is open to engaging both allies and adversaries in discussions about rebalancing global trade while preserving dialogue with China. He confirmed that talks with the European Union are ongoing and emphasised that the U.S. wants the European markets to be open to American goods. Vance suggested that a better trading relationship with Europe is possible if trade barriers are dropped. He also noted that China will have to let its population consume more as part of its economic adjustment.
Vance described negotiations with Iran as progressing well so far, reaffirming that while Iran may have civil nuclear Power, it cannot develop a program that enables nuclear weapons. The official added that President Trump would be open to sitting down with Russia and China to reduce the number of nuclear weapons in the world.
Regarding the war in Ukraine, Vance acknowledged that there is a big gulf between the Ukrainian and Russian positions, and it is impossible to mediate this without at least some direct negotiation between the two parties.
