Greece's consumer inflation accelerated last month

Figures from the National Statistical Service of Greece (ELSTAT) showed that the consumer price index rose by 0.8% in June after increasing by 0.2% in May. Economists had expected a 0.7% increase. In annual terms, consumer prices rose 2.8%, accelerating compared to May (+2.5%) and recording the strongest growth since September 2024. Consensus estimates suggested an increase of 2.7% per annum. The average CPI for the 12-month period from July 2024 to June 2025 increased by 2.6% per annum.

ELSTAT said that the growth in monthly terms was due to higher prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages (+0.8%), housing (+1.3%), health (+0.2%), transport (+2.0%) and for hotel-cafés-restaurants (+1.0%).

The data also showed that in June, the harmonized index of consumer prices (HICP) - an indicator that allows to compare inflation in Greece with inflation in European countries – rose by 1.3% on a monthly basis and by 3.6% per year. The average HICP for the 12-month period from July 2024 to June 2025 increased by 3.1% per year.
