Construction output in the eurozone increased again in May

Data published by Eurostat showed that in May, the construction output grew by 2.9%, slowing compared to April (+4.7%, revised from +3.0%). Economists had expected a 2.7% increase. On a monthly basis, the volume of construction fell 1.7% after rising 4.3% in April. Meanwhile, among the EU countries, the volume of construction decreased by 1.3% mom and increased by 2.7% per year.

In the eurozone, compared with April, production in construction decreased for construction of buildings (-1.3%), civil engineering (-0.7%) and for specialized construction activities (-1.7%).

Compared with May 2024, in the eurozone, production in construction increased for construction of buildings (+6.4%), civil engineering (+2.9%) and for specialized construction activities (+1%).

Among Member States for which data are available, the highest annual increases in production in construction were recorded in Spain (+44.6%), Czechia (+11.6%), Hungary and Portugal (both +5.4%). The largest decreases were observed in Poland (-4.8%), Germany (-3.4%) and France (-3.3%).
